The RACE (Race across Europe)

ROUTE

The RACE 2017 starts in Calais, tracks north through the French Ardennes and crosses the Rhine into Germany. From here it climbs briefly into the Black Forest and onto a high plain that traverses east across Germany into Austria before heading south into Italy then immediately east into  Slovenia to cross the Vrsic Pass. The route then descends back into Italy and heads due west, crossing the Colle dell’Agnello back into France. We ride through Provence, climb over Mont Ventoux, then head south into the Languedoc Roussillon to cross the eastern Pyrenees into Spain. Spain provides consistently good road cycling all the way to the orange groves of Andalucia and the final rolling roads to Gibraltar, with views of the Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and mountainous north African coastline.

The route for 2017 is divided into 19 stages of 250 km each. The route has been designed to maximise quiet, well-surfaced roads with enough width to accommodate cyclists and support vehicles without hindering traffic. The route avoids major cities and towns in order to reduce route finding to a minimum. If you would like a kml file (viewable in Google Earth) of the route please contact us directly. Once you have registered we will provide you with the full route as a set of GPS files. At registration in Calais all RACE crews will be provided with two sets of the Route Handbook containing full maps and written directions for each stage of the route.

How far and how high is the route?

The route is 2934 miles (4722 km) long and crosses the Alps twice and the Pyrenees once. Key passes include the Turracherhohe (1763m) in Austria, Vrsic Pass (1611m) in Slovenia, Colle dell’Agnello (2744m) on the Italian / French border, Mont Ventoux (1912m) in France and the Col d’Ares (1513m) on the French / Spanish border.
